What is EN-CAMHS 2?

EN-CAMHS 2 (Enhancing Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service Referrals Project 2) is the name of our NIHR funded project at GM Digital which aims to improve the CAMHS referral process through the use of an online tool to help streamline and improve referrals and the quality of information coming through to CAMHS. We aim to create, develop and improve the tool during the process of the project, working alongside CAMHS services and the public along the way.

EN-CAMHS 2: Why It Was Needed

EN-CAMHS 1 found that lots of kids were being rejected from CAMHS (the place where they get help for their mental health) and that this was causing stress for families. The people who referred kids to CAMHS, like doctors and teachers, also found it frustrating because the process was unclear, and they didn’t know where else to send kids who didn’t qualify for CAMHS. After talking to kids and families, EN-CAMHS 1 realized that a digital tool could help make the referral process easier and clearer for everyone. So, EN-CAMHS 2 was created to build this tool and try to solve the problems found in EN-CAMHS 1.

What was EN-CAMHS 1?

EN-CAMHS 1 was a research project that wanted to make it easier for kids to get help with their mental health. They found that almost 25% of kids who were referred to CAMHS, which is a special service for kids with mental health problems, didn’t get accepted. This made families sad and frustrated, especially because they often waited a long time for an answer. Doctors and teachers also found it hard to know where else to send kids who weren’t accepted by CAMHS.

To figure out how to make things better, the EN-CAMHS 1 team talked to lots of people, including kids, parents, doctors, teachers, and CAMHS workers. They also looked at referral data from different CAMHS services in England.
